Isaac Pena

Isaac Pena, New York

Isaac Peña is a yoga instructor, personal trainer, and contortionist in New York City. Growing up in Chelsea, he began practicing martial arts at the age of seven and was introduced to Zen meditation at the age of nine. Working as a personal trainer at Equinox, he found yoga in the mid-nineties, studying under a variety of teachers including David Life and Sharon Gannon, Dharma Mittra, Glenn Black, Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, David Swenson, Nancy Gilgoff, Manouso Manos, Chuck Miller and Maty Ezraty. In continuing to expand his knowledge of the body’s potential, Isaac trained for several years in contortion under Jonathan Nosan, opening his doors to the circus community.

He also made several trips to Thailand, receiving his certification in Thai Body work under the guidance of Chung Kal & Chaiyuth Priyasith. Isaac then co-founded Sankalpah Yoga studio where he taught for five years until its closing in 2011. Today, he trains other contortionist and circus performers, teaches weekly classes and workshops at numerous studios across Manhattan including Pure Yoga, Exhale Spa, and Body and Pole, and holds yearly retreats at LuxYoga with Benjamin Sears. Although Isaac is known for his work with top contortionists and yoga asana champions (and his ability to bend in any possible direction..), it’s his ability to teach teachers, and thus everyone, to truly understand the fundamentals of the practice that makes him special.

Friday

12:00 : Workshop- Yoga from the ground up. (Studio 3 Small Room)

Through my years of teaching (and teaching others to teach), I’ve always encouraged the instruction of yoga and movement from the ground up. Now that can mean many things! From sitting or lying on the ground to begin and center to learning how to align a posture starting from your feet or your seat (whichever is your “asana” at the moment), we will build upon the theme of connecting from the root to ascend.

Saturday

09:00 : Circular movement (Studio 1 North)

- Circular movement in the asana practice.

Yoga asana is often criticized for being very linear. In this practice we will bring the idea of making circles to smooth out the rough edges to make for a more flowing practice

18:00 : Liquid spine (Studio 1 North)

This class will begin with a thorough warm up that facilitates spinal movement in all directions. We will then break down the practice by moving into different sections of the spine (upper, middle, lower) and speaking about how to apply the bandhas (specific “core” isolations) to make back bending more pleasant and ultimately liberate the body to access deeper shapes. All levels

Sunday

13:45 : Finding your split (Studio 4 Foyer)

This journey towards the splits we will combine mobility drills from acrobatics and martial arts with the progressive vinyasa philosophy of repeating and adding on. We will cover the full range of preparatory actions to much deeper stretches so that you can simultaneously feel where you’re at as well as know where you’re going past this class. This is an all levels class.
